L12
I have absolutely no interest in social networking sites such as Myspace or Facebook. IMO, they are a scourge on our society and have little or no socially redeeming value. I am not going to participate in this lesson's discovery exercises.

I’m sorry to hear you say that these social networking sites have no value. Many people feel they are a great way to connect with people around the world. We would never force you to create an account to something you feel so strongly about; however, you could just go on to see how other libraries are using these sites. You don't have to create an account with either one , but i do encourage you to explore one of the sites. Your local TACky could help you by show ing you some highlights of the sites.
Did you know that MySpace was originally created as a way for musicians to network and get their songs heard and that it is now the 3rd most popular website in the United States? Or that Facebook was created by a student at Harvard University as a way to communicate with students and teachers? Facebook then expanded to all the Ivy League schools, and then to universities and finally high schools. It was not until about a year and a half ago that it started allowing anyone 13 and older to join.
That “they are a scourge on our society and have little or no socially redeeming value” is a strong statement. I understand that you may not like these sites, but many of our customers do find them useful for a variety of reasons. And the reason for this learning exercise is to check out the sites our customers are using.
By exploring one of these sites, you will be able to use what you find to bolster your argument and could do so via your blog. You could then be using the blog to share your opinions and reasoning about this issue, which is one of the reasons people use blogs.
If you still feel that you cannot complete this step in the Learning 2.0 program, you are certainly not being forced to do so. However, in fairness to all the others who are participating fully and sharing the logic behind their opinions, your refusal could make you ineligible to receive the MP3 Player.
